“Echoes of the Soul: Where Words, Notes, and Visual Artistry Converge”

This eclectic mural pays homage to the three genres of art that we all know and love—literature, music, and visual art. The piece celebrates contemporary artists who have pushed boundaries and who also serve as vessels to the great, infinite creative energy source that has been piercing the depths of our souls for thousands of years. Award-winning author R.O. Kwon is depicted to the left of the mural surrounded by both Korean pine trees and famous literary images connected to Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allen Poe and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The mural is anchored by the world-renowned jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington, best known for blending elements of traditional jazz with influences from funk, hip-hop, and classical music, and for his work on the soundtrack for the movie "Black Panther." He pours himself into his music while Native American artist, Ellen Neel, is prepping her gouge (chisel) to begin her totem pole masterpiece. Ellen is a Kwakwakaʼwakw woodcarver artist, widely known as the first woman known to have professionally carved totem poles. Ellen Neel has long inspired younger female artists to keep their traditions and history alive.

Echoes of the Soul is the third public art commission to hang in the Artcade at Ball & Socket Arts.
